Nelson Aggregate participated again this year as part of the annual Mayor and Council’s Community Clean-up on Saturday April 25th.
The weather cooperated and spirits were high as 40 employees, friends and family members headed out onto local roadways in search of garbage and recyclables with picks and bags in hand. Throughout the morning, water was delivered to quench parched throats as temperatures rose to seasonal highs. The trash collected weighed in at 1370 kg, up substantially from last year, due in part to the addition of Guelph Line, No. 1 Sideroad and Cedar Springs Road to the pick up area.
Nelson’s Environment and Safety Manager, Randy Warren noted, “It is apparent that our past efforts have made a substantial impact, as we collected as much trash on each of the new routes as was collected on all the others combined.”
Nelson president, Norm Elmhirst added, “It’s really encouraging to see the sense of community and responsibility shown by our co-workers and how they are instilling that spirit in their children.” Young people made up half the Nelson Cleanup Team.
At 11:30 AM all workers departed for the downtown, to participate in the barbecue at City Hall. This gave a chance to meet and chat with City Council members, Regional Chair Gary Carr, MP Mike Wallace and fellow clean-up groups from across Burlington. The burgers, hot dogs and drinks supplied for all by Turtle Jacks and Tim Hortons were much appreciated, and the kudos from local politicians were well received.
Nelson Aggregate would like to encourage everyone to think of every day as an Earth Day and to keep our roadsides free of garbage.
