Nelson opened its doors on Sunday May 29th to its neighbours as part of Mount Nemo Day 2011, sponsored by Nemo 7G. Nelson was one of five separate tour sites spread across the Mount Nemo area in North Burlington. Bus tours were conducted at the site from 1:00- 4:00PM and based on feedback they were appreciated and enjoyed by all.
Representatives of the Nemo 7G group erected a small tent in the quarry’s parking area and brochures were available detailing all of the tour sites on Mount Nemo. People were asked to comment on what their 150 year vision would be for the future of Mount Nemo.
The quarry tours took up to 45 minutes and the bus routing meandered through the quarry, stopping several times at locations to highlight specific quarry features, providing an opportunity for questions and discussion. Most people had never been in a quarry before and found the ponds and greenery in the rehabilitated areas of the quarry to be both unexpected and fascinating.
Walt Rickli, a world renowned stone sculptor who has his workshop on the quarry site, had his shop open for visitors. People marveled at the unique and beautiful sculptures that he had on display and Walt was there to answer questions from the visitors.
