Nelson’s Waynco Sand and Gravel Operation Wins Conservation Award
(May 24, 2011)
We were both surprised and honoured to learn that our Waynco Ltd. operation, a division of Nelson Aggregate Co., was a winner of the annual Conservation Award from the Carolinian Canada Coalition.
For the past several years Tom Palko, manager of the operation, has partnered with the Waterloo Stewardship Network to indentify, preserve and expand the Tallgrass Prairie on our Cambridge property. We are quite proud of the results of this endeavour, but we are even more proud of being recognized by Carolinian Canada Coalition. It is a real tribute to be nominated for and receive an award that has been given to so many great conservationists in the past.
While we take pride in our Tallgrass Prairie, one of the largest remaining stands in all of Ontario, we know that its successful restoration wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of Stephen May, Pat Deacon, Graham Buck and all of the volunteers from the Waterloo Stewardship Network, who spent many rainy Saturdays collecting seeds, inventorying species and carrying out other important works. To see the planning that goes into a controlled burn, for instance, is quite amazing and they have conducted them without a hitch. The controlled burns are needed to maintain the habitat for the tallgrass plants.
